R&D’s highly promising METIS project (for Multiphysics Exploration Technology Integrated System) began a pilot trial in December 2017 to test seismic acquisition in the primary forest of Papua New Guinea. This R&D project is dedicated to enabling onshore seismic acquisition in hard-to-access parts of the globe. METIS, for Multiphysics Exploration Technology Integrated System, deploys innovative airborne technologies to reduce the environmental impact of operations while enhancing safety.
The operational phase of the METIS project began in late 2017 with a pilot trial covering an exploration zone of 20 hectares of primary forest in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The "nerve center" for the operations was the base camp Antelope-3, located 300 kilometers from Port Moresby, the capital. The trial, in field conditions, tested the performance of METIS' technology building blocks, namely:
Autonomous drone flight beyond visual range.
Release of the sensors (DARTs) above sky holes (natural canopy openings) and "planting" of DARTs in the ground.
The quality of the seismic signal recorded by the DARTs.
Sensor communication in a complex environment (rain, dense forest cover, etc.).
The drone's onboard infrared and optical "safety clearance" system, designed to make sure there is no human or animal presence in the DART drop zones
An R&D success
Field teams successfully overcame the logistical and meteorological challenges of the primary forest in PNG to demonstrate the effectiveness of METIS in a hard-to-access region. The pilot trial validated the fundamentals of the operational model: autonomous deployment of seismic sensors from the sky; successful DART “planting” in the ground; optimal coupling after the DART free-fall; and reliability of the real-time wireless communication system.
What's next? The results of this pilot trial pave the way for the next key phase of the project: a commercial-scale pilot in 2021, which will entail tens of thousands of DARTs released by a swarm of drones over a zone of about a hundred square kilometers.
